In today’s connected world, many devices in your home are dependent on your wireless network. That means that if you get a new wireless router or change your router password, some devices will stop working until you are able to update them.
Before getting a new router or password, consider the devices that will be affected and make arrangements with your service provider if you will need the devices updated immediately.
Your actual security system and all Z-Wave devices (most smart door locks, some lighting control, smart thermostats, etc.) will not be impacted by the router because they communicate via a cellular signal through the GSM.
The following QEI Security & Technology devices will need to be updated by a technician:
1. Smart Garage Door Opener
Your smart garage door opener connects to your smartphone app via your wireless network. If you change the password, a technician will need to come to your home to reconnect the device to the system. This is not covered under the service warranty because it is not an issue with our equipment or installation, so you will need to pay for this service call. Your garage door will continue to work using the traditional garage door opener.
2. Security Cameras
Your security cameras connect to your smartphone app via your wireless network. Like with the smart garage door opener, if you change the password, a technician will need to come to your home to reconnect the device to the system. This is not covered under the service warranty.
If you have a Control4 automation system, the system and it’s devices will need to be reconfigured. Like with the security components above, you will pay for a service call.
The following devices will need to be updated, but you can do it yourself:
1. SONOS components
SONOS is tied to your wireless network, so when you log on via the app on your phone, you will need to update the wireless password. This should reconnect all SONOS devices.
2. Network Devices
If you have Apple TV, Roku or other similar devices, you will need to update the wireless password before they will work.
