Wired vs. Wireless Security

If you’re considering a home security system, you have to decide if you want a wired system (connected to a landline phone) or a wireless system (connected through your cell phone signal).

Our recommendation is a wireless security system.

About 90 percent of the systems we install are wireless because they’re more reliable, less intrusive for homeowners and can easily be connected to home technology.

Wireless security will continue to work even if the power goes out in your home or an intruder cuts the phone line (in both of those cases, your wired security system will no longer work).

The cellular signal in your security system does not transmit on the same network as your cell phone calls and requires a weaker signal, so it is absolutely possible that your alarm system can communicate on the cellular signal in your home even if your phone can’t.

Can wireless security signals be jammed? It is possible, with the right equipment and if the burglar knows exactly what type of system is in your house. The probability of that is very low – most burglaries are crimes of opportunity.

Wireless security systems are much easier to install than a landline system, which can take up to two hours longer. Plus, most wired systems require that holes are drilled in walls and, in most cases, must be located next to your phone jack.

If you’re building a new home, you may want to consider the security system pre-wire even if you know you want a wireless system. The pre-wire hardwires your door contacts and motion sensors, which help them to stay in place better.

Interactive Monitoring

With a wireless security system, you also get interactive monitoring capabilities. With a QEI Security & Technology system, you can control your system from a free, secure app on your smartphone or tablet.

You can also control smart locks, lights, thermostats and cameras with your app. Your monthly monitoring costs may rise, depending what you add.
