Security System Wakes Johns Island Resident Before Tornado

“The tornado went right through the center of my neighborhood and it was my security system that woke me up and kept me safe,” says QEI Security & Technology customer Daniel Corbitt.

Tornado Weather Alert copy 300x197 - Security System Wakes Johns Island Resident Before TornadoA Post & Courier article said the weather service sent out a tornado warning advising residents to take shelter immediately seven minutes before the twister touched down. Radar indicated the tornado was on the ground for about 10 minutes and Michael Emlaw, meteorologist in charge of the Charleston National Weather Service station said the tornado was at least an EF-1.

QEI Security & Technology customer Daniel Corbitt said he didn’t hear the alerts on his phone and the lightening and thunder didn’t wake him.

“I heard my alarm panel beeping and the weather alert on the panel showed there was a tornado warning. I like that I had to get up to see the message before I could stop the beeping.”

Corbitt, who has a 2GIG panel combined with Alarm.com interactive, says if he had been able to discard the weather alert from the app on his phone, he may have been in greater danger.

In the event of a weather alert, like the one issued on September 25 around 1 a.m., the user must go to the message center on the touchscreen control panel, view the message and mark it as read before the beeping will stop.
