Home automation can save you money and help you to live sustainably. QEI Security & Technology experts offer these four tips for eco-friendly home automation:
1. Lower your lighting default setting.
Adjusting the default setting for your lights from 100 to 90 percent will save enough energy to reduce up to 850 pounds of carbon dioxide each year, the equivalent of not driving a car for an entire month. And you probably won’t even notice the difference!
2. Use motion sensors to turn off lights.
Use automated lighting or motion sensors so lights aren’t a drain on your wallet.
Using either your QEI Security & Technology alarm system or control system to automate your lights. Program your front porch light to turn on at dusk and off at dawn. Set your lights to turn off when movement isn’t detected for a certain amount of time. Put those sensors to good use!
3. Control energy use remotely.
Using a programmable thermostat, you can control your usage and costs when you’re home or away with the touch of a button. Set your thermostat to adjust automatically when you drive a mile away from your home and then readjust when you’re within a mile of your home. With a control system, like Control4, you have even more flexibility.
4. Use your custom HVAC settings.
Your programmable thermostat that is hooked to your QEI Security & Technology security system will track your activity and let you know ways to save energy. With a control system, you can self-monitor your daily conditions, set specific temperatures for specific rooms of the house and even program ceiling fans to turn on or off. Studies have shown that manually turning on and off or adjusting a heat pump or air conditioner prevents the system from operating efficiently.
