Shopping Super Bowl TV Deals? Here’s What You Need to Know

Super Bowl TV deals are everywhere as the big game approaches. But, just because it is a good deal, doesn’t mean it is the TV for you.

QEI Security & Technology experts point out that a TV ideal for watching sports may not be what you’d choose if you’re watching Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad.

Here’s what you need to know to get a great TV for watching sports (and know if the Super Bowl TV deals are good):

1. Check the refresh rate.

A refresh rate of 240 Hz is ideal for sports, while 120 Hz is adequate for regular TV watching.

“Don’t be duped by the $500 price tag on a 50” TV,” says Carl Wanamaker, QEI’s custom integration manager. “When a TV is priced low, you’re almost always sacrificing the refresh rate and internal circuitry, which is crucial when watching sports.”

2. 4K or not?

Super Bowl 50 will not be broadcast in 4K and it will likely be years before any other sporting events are shown using that technology.

But, Netflix, Amazon, Ultraflix and YouTube are offering 4K content, so if you’re a big streamer, it may be worth it… and the deals could be good.

3. Bigger is not always better.

It would be hard to pass up a great deal on a 55” or 80” TV, right?

Before you buy, consider the size of the room where the TV will be. For a 55” TV, the ideal viewing distance is 88” (about seven and a half feet). Will you have that much space between your TV and couch or chair? If not, a smaller TV would actually give you a BETTER viewing experience.

Side note: you’ll want at least 10 feet between your couch and an 80” TV.

4. TV mounting tips.

If you’re mounting your TV on the wall, we highly recommend a professional – like QEI Security & Technology. But, if you’re going to DIY, our biggest tip is to properly secure your bracket – use anchors.

“It would be a shame to have your perfect TV lying on the floor during Super Bowl 50 because it wasn’t properly anchored,” notes Brian Pember, VP of operations.
